"It’s a transformative experience to simply pause instead of immediately filling up the space. By waiting, we begin to connect with fundamental restlessness as well as fundamental spaciousness"
– Pema Chödrön
First, there is time set aside to talk confidentially with the therapist about your goals for the massage, any places of pain or tension, and other issues that may be affecting your body. If it is your first session with us, you will be asked to fill out a health history form so that your medical safety may be insured and your session can be tailored to your individual needs.
Once you and the therapist have agreed upon a loose structure for the treatment and expectations for the session are clear, the therapist will leave the room so that you may disrobe to your comfort level and get onto the table under the sheet. The therapist uncovers only the part of the body being worked on, while the rest of the body remains draped. Lubricant is often used to reduce the drag of the massage strokes on the skin, but there are many options to choose from including oil, cream, lotion, unscented products, or none at all. The session may include the whole body and/or focus in on areas that need specific attention. It is common for parts of the massage to feel intense in localized spots of high tension or tenderness. However, the pressure should never hurt you. If you feel uncomfortable at any time, it is important to share this with your therapist. Your comfort is the top priority.
After the massage, the therapist will again give you privacy and all the time you need to transition off the table and get dressed. Water is provided and is very healthy to drink after massage. Your 30 – 90 minute session is followed by a brief check-in with your therapist when you can give feedback, ask questions, and receive suggestions for self-care and future treatment.
